Pictured here is Frank Springer from Wawa, Ont., Canada with a 53.6 lb. Lake Trout that he caught off the west end of Michipicoten Island in Lake Superior in the summer of 2004. Using a downrigger, Frank was trolling a large sucker minnow behind a silver and bronze coloured attractor over shoals about 35 ft. deep. Frank was using 20 lb. test line and it took about 35 to 40 minutes to land this big lunker. This fish won the Canadian Sportfishing ‘Minn Kota Big Fish Award’ for Lake Trout in 2004.
Frank was fishing with his son-in-law, who (can you believe this?) caught a 24 pounder just before this twosome slammed the big one. Now, I’d say this was a pretty good day on the water! Both fish have been mounted and now adorn the walls in the homes of these two fishermen.
